The Irish Shamrock

The Irish Shamrock actually comes from the clover 3 leaf plant. The Irish/gaelic word for shamrock is seamróg. It is most associated with the white clover. It is very rare to find a clover with 4 leafs but if you do it is believed to special good luck.

The shamrock is traditionally worn on St. Patrick's Day by people of Irish descent around the world. Noone is quite sure of the origin of this tradition. But certainly after Queen Victoria made it a crime to wear shamrock, Irish people took to wearing the shamrock in their droves as a mark of defiance.

The shamrock also has a religious signifance, the 3 leaf shamrock is also a symbol for the Holy Trinity: father, son and holy ghost.
