St Luke the Evangelist (Book of Kells). The symbols of the Evangelists are believed to represent the four stages of Christ's life: birth, death resurrection and ascension. Christ was a man in birth, a calf in his death, a lion in his resurrection and an eagle in ascension up to heaven.
