Throughout the latter part of the 18th Century Tone was involved in several abortive Irish rebellions, in particular the landing of a French force under General Humbert on boad the Hoche in 1798.

Tone was captured by the British and he died from a self-inflicted wound after being sentenced to death for his part in the 1798 rebellion.
