Wolfe Tone Black & White FramedPortait
Black & White Portrait of Thebold Wolfe Tone (1763-1798), a leading figure in the United Irishmen Irish Independence movement and is regarded as the godfather of Irish Republicanism.
Throughout the latter part of the 18th Century Tone was involved in several abortive Irish rebellions, in particular the landing of a French force under General Humbert on boad the Hoche in 1798. Tone was captured by the British and he died from a self-inflicted wound after being sentenced to death for his part in the 1798 rebellion.
