'The Currach' by John Skelton. Skelton is best known for his observations of rural social life, particularly on the West coast of Ireland. His paintings capure the passing of a now lost world if Irish island life. Skelton once wrote 'The World I see around me is not my world anymore. As you grow old change makes you sad.'

John Skelton (1923-1999)

John Skelton was born in Belfast in 1923. He was particularly associated with the figurative revival of the 1940's and 1950's. Probably his best know works are his scenes of mid 20th century Irish rural life, many of his best known works feature the Aran Islands and County Kerry coastal fishingcommunities.
