It seems likely that Bulgaria will be among the next handful of nations to join the European Union, and the National Bank of Bulgaria has, since January 2002, pegged the national currency - the Lev, to the euro. Bulgaria should move quickly towards full inclusion in the eurozone. The International Numismatic Agency has produced a series of pattern or prototype euro coins to show how Bulgaria's coins could look when this nation adopts the new currency.

Many recent Bulgarian coins have featured national and international sporting events including the summer Olympic Games and the Winter Olympics. There were several commemorative coins issued for the European and World Soccer Games, and Bulgaria itself has a long history of sporting success. Bulgarian weightlifters have won gold and silver medals at the Olympic Games, and Bulgaria has achieved distinction in wresting, boxing, hurdles, athletics and watersports.

The pattern 2 euro coin features cycling and the 1 euro basketball. The 50 cent features weightlifting, the 20 cent sailing, and the 10 and 5 cent coins have themes of archery and hurdling respectively. The 2 cent and1 cent patterns have designs featuring a high jumper and a female gymnast.
