The banjo is a stringed instrument of African origin. Today it is probably most commonly associated with country and bluegrass music. However the banjo has also had an impact in Irish traditional music. Since the 1960's the banjo was popularised in Ireland by players such as Barney McKenna of the Dubliners who introduced the banjo to Irish audiences. The Irish Tenor Banjo is a unique style of playing and is notable for a similar playing style to the Irish Mandolin and the Irish Bouzouki. The tenor banjo is the most common banjo for solo playing

The modern banjo usually comes in four and five string versions. A banjo consists of a wooden or metal rim with a strong calf or goat skin drumhead stretched across. The neck is mounted on the side of the rim with a tailpiece opposite the neck and a bridge.
