making him one of an exclusive club to have more than one Irish stamp issued in his honour.

John Barry (1745?13 September1803) was an officer in the Continental Navyand later in the United States Navy

Barry was born in County Wexford, Irelandand appointed a Captain in the Continental Navy7 December1775. He commanded Lexingtonand Alliance. He was seriously wounded 29 May1781while in command of Alliance during her capture of HMS Atalantaand Trepassy. Appointed senior captain upon the establishment of the U.S. Navy, he commanded the frigateUnited Statesin the Quasi-Warwith France. He also had a hand in the establishment of the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Commodore Barry died at Strawberry Hill, near Philadelphia, 13 September 1803, and was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Philadelphia.
