This is a framed selection of the first Definitive Stamps. Following the ratification of the 'Treaty' and teh establishment of te 'Irish Free State' in 1922, on Feb 1st J.J. Walsh (Postmaster General) announced a competition for submission of desitngs for the first regular series of Irish Postal Stamps. Four designs were eventually chosen and are represented in this collection.

Framed First Irish Stamp Issues

'Special Framed Edition'

This is a framed selection of the first Definitive Stamps. Following the ratification of the 'Treaty' and teh establishment of te 'Irish Free State' in 1922, on Feb 1st J.J. Walsh (Postmaster General) announced a competition for submission of desitngs for the first regular series of Irish Postal Stamps. Four designs were eventually chosen and are represented in this collection. These designs were issued from late 1922 to mid 1923 and subsequently continued on the 2nd Series of Irish Definitives.  The designs were 1. Map of Ireland (J. Ingram). 2, Cross of Cong (Mrs L. Williams). 3, Sword of Light (J.J. O'Reilly). 4, Arms of the Four Provinces (Mrs M Girling). All designs were chosen for their traditional and symbolic nature.
