Framed 1922/23 Irish Free State Overprint Stamps
These stamps are a selection of authentic overprinted stamps issued in 1922. On Feb 8th 1922, following independence, the Dublin general post office announced that British stamps would continue to be used on an interim basis but would be overprinted. The British stamps were used pending submissions for Irish designs. The stamps depicted King George V but were overprinted with the words 'Rialtas Sealadac ne hEireann' (Provisional Government of Ireland) and 'Saorstat Eireann' (Irish Free State).

On Feb 8th 1922, following independence, the Dublin general post office announced that British stamps would continue to be used on an interim basis but would be overprinted. The British stamps were used pending submissions for Irish designs. The stamps depicted King George V but were overprinted with the words 'Rialtas Sealadac ne hEireann' (Provisional Government of Ireland) and 'Saorstat Eireann' (Irish Free State). The unusual nature of these stamps attracted huge worldwide interest by being British stamps with political Irish wording. The stamps were printed in England and were overprinted in Dublin by two print houses 'Dollard' and 'Thom'. Coils were overprinted in Dublin by two print houses 'Dollard' and 'Thom'. Coils were overprinted by 'Harrison of London'.
