Belfast

Belfast (from the Irish: Béal Feirste meaning 'Mouth of the River Farset') is a city in the United Kingdom and the capital of Northern Ireland. It is the largest city in Northern Ireland and the province of Ulster, and the second-largest city on the island of Ireland (after Dublin). In the 2001 census the population within the city limits (the Belfast Urban Area) was 277,391, while 579,276 people lived in the wider Belfast Metropolitan Area.

Belfast is situated on Northern Ireland's eastern coast and straddles the border between County Antrim and County Down. The city is flanked to the north by a series of hills, including Cavehill, which are thought to be inspiration for Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. He imagined they resembled the shape of a sleeping giant safeguarding the city. Belfast city developed near the mouth of the River Lagan and at the south-western end of the long natural inlet of Belfast Lough, making it an ideal location for the shipbuilding industry that would make it famous. When the Titanic was built in Belfast in 1912, Harland and Wolff had the largest shipyard in the world.

Belfast saw the worst of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. However, since the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, there has been major redevelopment in the city including Victoria Square, the Titanic Quarter and Laganside as well as the new Odyssey complex and the landmark Waterfront Hall. Much of the city centre has now been pedestrianised. The city is served by two airports: The George Best Belfast City Airport adjacent to Belfast Lough and Belfast International Airport which is near Lough Neagh. Queen's University of Belfast is the main university in Belfast. The University of Ulster also maintains a campus in the city, which concentrates on fine art and design.
