Oughterard, despite being a small town, is quite famous for its thriving pub culture and its numerous high quality bars and hotels.

Located some 26 km northwest of Galway on the N59 road, Oughterard is the chief angling centre on the lough. 3 km outside the town stand the ruins of Aughnanure Castle, a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house.

In James Joyce's short story 'The Dead,' the character Michael Furey was buried in Oughterard.
