Ireland was one of the founding members of the United Nations in December 1955. Throughout the last 50 years Ireland has been to the forefront in promoting international action on various global debates including nuclear disarment, the fight against humber and a keen participant in UK peacekeeping foreces. Recently Ireland held one of the seats on the UN Security Council. Former Irish President Mary Robinson has served as the UN Human Rights Commissioner. Today Irish Defence Peacekeepin Forces continue to serve overseas all around the world. The stamps feature Defence Forces personnel from the Army and Garda Síochana and the 65c stamp festures Frederick Boland who was Ireland's first permanent representative to the United Nations.
