The Irish tin whistle or penny whistle is a simple six-holed woodwind instrument. Tin whistles date from the 12th century but only became popular instruments in the 20th Century. Tin whistles are available in several keys, the most common being the D major key (popular in Europe) and the C major key (most popular in USA).

The most renowned Irish tin whistle players include the legendary Paddy Moloney and Sean Potts of The Chieftains. A more contemporary player is Andrea Corr of The Corrs.
